What kind of communication system can you trust when a single gas leak could threaten lives? In the extreme heat and corrosive atmosphere of the UAE’s sour gas fields, ADNOC Onshore relies on M!DGE routers to deliver real-time alerts and uninterrupted SCADA data where safety cannot fail.

Challenge: Critical Communications in Hazardous Sour Gas Zones

Driven by rising global demand for natural gas, operators are increasingly developing sour gas reservoirs rich in Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S) and Carbon Dioxide (CO₂). These fields pose major technical and safety challenges:

  • high toxicity requiring immediate alarm notifications
  • accelerated corrosion of equipment
  • elevated operational and maintenance costs
  • increasing sourness as fields mature
  • harsh desert conditions exceeding 50 °C

For ADNOC Onshore (formerly ADCO), reliable toxic gas monitoring and wellhead SCADA were essential. Any communication delay could compromise both safety and operational continuity.

Solution: M!DGE Routers Deliver Secure and Reliable Field Operation

Between 2014 and 2025, RACOM supplied multiple batches of M!DGE2 and M!DGE3 routers, industrial antennas and accessories through trusted UAE system integrators. These routers are now deployed across numerous Abu Dhabi onshore oil and gas sites, supporting:

  • toxic gas leak detection at H₂S-rich wells
  • wellhead monitoring and automation
  • real-time SCADA data acquisition and alarm transmission

Each M!DGE router is tightly integrated with Rockwell RTUs, forming a compact and rugged control unit. Operating in desert environments above 50 °C, the routers maintain consistent cellular connectivity.

When H₂S reaches critical thresholds – such as 10 ppm – the system immediately issues SMS notifications via the M!DGE router to designated safety personnel.

Security is equally crucial. M!DGE provides:

  • VPN tunnelling
  • IPsec encryption
  • end-to-end secure IP connectivity

Together, these features give ADNOC a trusted platform for remote access, monitoring and control.

Results: Proven Stability and Long-Term Trust

Despite extreme conditions and mission-critical demands, M!DGE-based systems have operated continuously and without interruptions. ADNOC Onshore has expressed strong satisfaction with:

  • long-term reliability in corrosive, high-temperature conditions
  • flexible integration with existing field automation
  • robust connectivity for both SCADA and alarm delivery

The partnership has led to repeat orders and system expansion through local UAE partners.

The success of this project reinforces RACOM’s reputation in the Middle East as a trusted provider of industrial cellular communications for the world’s most demanding and hazardous environments.
