5G
Most operators are building 5G NSA (non-standalone) networks. 5G NSA networks need the existing 4G/LTE network to be functional, so it cannot be switched off.
Building 5G SA (standalone) networks is very expensive and it is highly probable that 5G SA will only be built in locations with high subscriber density.
Since the majority of new 5G networks are NSA and they need existing 4G/LTE infrastructure to be functional, there is no need to worry that M!DGE3 or M!DGE2 will not work in them.
Applications where M!DGE is used will not benefit from the main advantages of future 5G SA networks (high speed, low latency…). As it is not clear when and where the 5G SA networks will be built, it does not make sense to serially equip M!DGE with an expensive 5G module now. A better and more economical option is to add the mPCI expansion board only in cases where it is really necessary.
